This renovation project transforms a multi-family shophouse—about six households sharing the building—into a more connected and comfortable home. The client’s main living area is a 200 sq.m second floor (approx. 15 m × 10 m), now expanded with a new 200 sq.m third floor.

A key design feature is the new internal staircase, creating a double-height duplex space that improves flow and connection between the two floors.

To keep the renovation affordable and cost-efficient, we focused on smart budget-control strategies:

•Retain existing rooms and ceilings where possible.

•Refinish toilets but keep all plumbing in the original locations to prevent waterproofing issues.

•Reuse half of the existing door frames with upgraded architraves in a fresh new tone.

•Keep the original granite kitchen countertop and install new heavy-duty drawers for better functionality.

•Add more storage rooms using economical local steel shelving to maximize vertical space.

•Use lightweight steel for the new staircase and railing, reducing structural load and offering a more budget-friendly alternative to glass or stainless steel.

•Highlight the main living area with Makka wood flooring, while other rooms use simple tiles, vinyl flooring, or refreshed existing finishes.

This renovation delivers a modern, functional, and budget-conscious upgrade—perfect for large families living together in a shophouse setting
